    Bogota: Convention Capital

Bogota is fast becoming “the ideal city” to host international business conventions and congresses, according to a body dedicated to organising global gatherings.

Colombia’s capital already has several large conventions planned in the next few years – events that will bring tens of millions of dollars to the city in terms of tourism, trade and potential investment.

Now the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) has called the Colombian capital a “world class” destination for key industry events and said businesses and organisations across the world have praised the city for its hosting capacity.

Bogota’s success is one of the reasons why Colombia is now ranked third among Latin American countries when it comes to holding international congresses and conferences.

Almost 70,000 foreigners participated in events organised by the Greater Bogota Convention Bureau between 2010 and 2014 and the bureau expects that number to increase significantly in the next few years, benefiting both the local and national economy.

Bogota will host the Pan-American Ophthalmology Congress this year. The event, which will be held in August, is expected to attract more than 3.000 participants and have an economic impact on the city of more than $4,000,000 (US dollars).

Next year the capital will host the fifth United Cities and Local Governments’ (UCLG) World Congress, which is held every three years. UCLG represents the world’s local governments and more than 1,000 cities, in 95 countries, form part of its membership.

The UCLG summit is expected to have a total impact of more than USD $5 million on the city alone. More than 3,000 local and regional leaders are expected to attend the event, which will occupy more than 15,000 square meters of exhibition space in 30 large halls.

In 2017, Bogota will host the AGM of the Latin American Dermatologists, which is expected to attract more than 3,500 attendees. The economic impact of that event could also exceed more than USD $5 million.
