Colombia: cradle of great cyclists

Prominent road cyclists such as ‘Lucho’ Herrera, Martín Emilio ‘Cochise’ Rodríguez, Nairo Quintana, and Rigoberto Urán have brought Colombian flavor to the world.

To talk about cycling, we must begin with the great Colombian cyclist: Luis Alberto Herrera Herrera. ‘Lucho’, as he became known since 1981, is one of the most important emblems of Colombian sports. In 1989, he gifted us with 2 stage victories. Born in Fusagasugá, he won another stage in 1992. He is one of the Colombian cyclists with the most international titles.

A native of Fusagasugá, ‘Lucho’ thrilled thousands of Colombians who followed his victories abroad from afar, especially his win at the Vuelta a España in 1987.

Martín Emilio ‘Cochise’ Rodríguez was born in Medellín on April 14, 1942, and in 1973 he became the first Colombian to win a stage in the Giro, repeating the achievement with another stage victory in the 1975 edition.

Santiago Botero is another of the most remembered Colombian cyclists. His remarkable triumphs in the Tour de France rekindled the love of new generations for cycling. He raced with teams such as T-Mobile Team and Kelme. His most outstanding feats were in time trial events.

In the Giro

In 1995, Oliverio Rincón won a stage in the Giro d’Italia and José Jaime González closed the 90s with 2 victories: one in 1997 and another in 1999 in the same competition.

In 2000, it was Víctor Hugo Peña’s turn to celebrate, and in 2001, Carlos Contreras’.

Iván Parra won 2 stages in the 2005 edition, while Luis Felipe Laverde also won twice, but in different years: once in 2006 and again in 2007.

In 2012, the winner was Miguel Ángel Rubiano.

Rigoberto Urán won 2 stages, one in 2013 and another in 2014. In both editions he was runner-up of the race.

Quintana won 2 stages in the 2014 edition, in which he was also crowned champion of the Giro. That same year, Julián Arredondo won a stage.

In 2016, Esteban Chaves claimed his first stage victory, finishing runner-up overall that year.

The best year so far has been 2017. Nairo repeated a stage victory and was runner-up, while Fernando Gaviria achieved 4 stage wins and became the points champion.
