The insular region covers both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and comprehends continental islands such as Gorgona and Gorgonilla and oceanic islands such as the San Andrés and Providencia archipelago and the island of Malpelo. These islands hold important marine ecosystems that harbor a great amount of coral and aquatic species. In some, mangrove swamps and diverse species of flora are also found.
Three natural parks are located on Colombian islands; nevertheless, their jurisdiction corresponds to departments located of the pacific coast.
