    Cartagena: A world’s heritage site

Visit Cartagena and discover the magic of this city, declared world’s heritage site due to its amazing architecture and history.

In Colombia’s Caribbean coast you’ll find a city also known as the “Corral de Piedra” because of the huge walls that surround its historical city center, which have survived high tides, pirates and privateers. This tropical paradise is Cartagena de Indias, of the main cities of the Caribbean, and  emblematic in our country. It is definitely a Colombian landmark! knows some of the reasons why this beautiful Colombian city is a world heritage site.

Historical and cultural heritage: streets and fortresses that tell the history of a heroic city

The colonial cultural heritage of Cartagena is extraordinary and that is why it was declared a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1984, being the first Colombian place to be included in the World Cultural and Natural Heritage List!

Cartagena’s ensemble of forts is not only the biggest in South America, but also one of the best preserved. Castles, stonewalls and colonial churches make of this lovely coastal city an ideal tourist destination where heritage blends with the ocean, creating the most romantic atmosphere.

Narrow streets made of stone hold the history of a heroic city with a privileged view of the ocean, contrasting with the modern architecture that has grown out of its walls. Bocagrande and Castillo Grande among others, exhibit the contemporary face of Cartagena.

The Colombian Nobel Prizewinning author, Gabriel García Márquez, was profoundly inspired by this city; two of his greatest books, The Love in the Time of Cholera and Of Love and Other Demons use Cartagena as the perfect scenery for these passionate love stories.

Visit sites such as Castillo de San Felipe, Santa Clara’s Bastion and Plaza de la Aduana, and experience the magical realism in this unique world’s heritage city.

Let yourself be seduced by Cartagena de Indias and discover the amazing secrets that its walls have kept for centuries. Write your own unforgettable journey and let everybody know about the heroic city that withholds #TheBestOfColombia.
